A suggestion to implement this.
  1. CODE,C,8 : Product code exerting an influence
  2. HCLASS,C,8 Product class related to the product, excluding the one it belongs to
  3. O_COMP_RATE,N,3 Outgoing Competitive rate, the rate at which a research/manufacturing unit would help raising the Competitiveness rating.
  4. I_COMP_RATE,N,3 Ingoing Competitive, the arte at which a research/manufacturing unit would benefit from the existing competitiveness Rating
For the rates 100% would mean a contribution equal to the one of a true member of the product class.

To illustrate this with a real life exemple :

the town of Clermont-Ferrand , Auvergne, France.

It is a calm, provincial and mid-sized city in France in a hilly/montainous region. It is also the hometown of Michelin.
If we were to simulate this town in CapLab, it should get the specialization bonus in Wheels & Tire

Research, city specialization and semi-products

Semi-products, and raw products are the ugly ducklings in Capitalism Lab.

I mean, they do not enjoy specific research bonus, even when they are core to a product, e.g. Car Body far Cars and Automobile. An executive with a huge Automobile bonus would not enjoy any advantge manufacturing or researching about Engines, Wheel and Tires and so on, even if these semi products are core.

There is also the case of more generic products, such as Electronic components.

One way to help this problems would be to make semi-products manufacture and research come into play in a similar way as finished products towards the various product classes.

Plus, in Survival mode, it feels strange to be able to manufacture some advanced semi products such as electronic components, CPU or DVD, when we struggle to get a pair of socks out :P .
