R&D without a factory setup

If I start an R&D project and wait for it to end without a factory will I lose the technology gain? Or do you need to have the factory of the research you are researching built for it to apply?

if your researching a product like bread, you don't need a factory no.. once the research ends you will have a higher technology skill at making bread.

However unless your planning to make bread there is little benefit from the research beyond an AI company asking to buy your tech.

Understood my plan was I wanted to research the tech higher before starting manufacturing with it. End goal would be to manufacture with the technology I researched. I just didnt want to start manufacturing at a low tech.
