As demonstrated in the movie The King of Kong, even when players don't have direct access to software in order to manipulate game states, Twin Galaxies goes to paranoid extremes to verify whether high scores are legitimate. Soon afterwards, Hank Chien became famous by posting some of his videos directly to youtube. At least Donkey Kong is a short game.

As a long-term outspoken member at Need For Speed World, I summarize EA's cheating situation to be "just admit you're not doing anything about it, because you can't. Quit telling us 'you're fighting a constant battle against cheaters' and admit that there's nothing to be done." I fully believe the policy is simply not to remove players that continue to spend money in the game. (Please understand that I operate on good faith. If it's possible for lag or bug to explain away a possible cheat, then there was no cheat. It's reasonable to assume that the huge number of false claims make it theoretically financially impractical to address every claim.)

Cheating will always be possible, unless you design a system that goes deeper than a cheater is willing to go. Which I believe is theoretically impossible and certainly impractical.

It's all just a matter of trust.
