Not necessarily. If you only have 1 store, you miss out on the "chain store" bonus. Also if demand is much lower than supply, you will have purchasing and sales depts not doing anything

The layout with 4 products and an advertising unit is optimal if you plan on using advertising. Otherwise I use 3 products that are all double linked to two sales units. It seems to me having only one store selling one product wouldn't meet the demand for that product, leaving room for competitors. I try as hard as possible to get 80-100% market share with without price cutting by offering a superior product and building up brand. This isn't always possible because the AI is also doing R&D and advertising, but that's where the game is for me.
