This "problem" bugs me since Cap2. The brand your subsidiary owned, completely disappears after the merger.
I understand different brand strategies could make the new combined brand difficult to calculate. But it doesn't make sense customers suddenly forget what a product was like and its associated concepts over-night. I think the new brand should be the weight average of old brands from parent and child company.
If both parent and child company use unique brand, than it should be simple that a new brand is the weight average of
((market share % of parent) * (parent brand strength) + (market share % of child) * (child brand strength)) / (combined market share % of both parent and child)
If the child company uses ranged or corporate brand, than the child brand strength will be diluted and distributes to different products. (it could be simply divided into equal parts base on number of products produced, and weight adjust according to market share owned). If the parent company uses ranged or corporate brand, than the child brand strength will also be added as similar but in reverse.
I think this should help merger becomes a more useful tool even at early stage, rather than just for showing off your wealth.

Re: Brand after merger
I think what's required is the ability to have multiple brands and a way to transition them, because once you acquire a corporation all the products they made immediately get stamped with your company brand. So maybe they could give the brand, a 10% bump in awareness so it doesn't disappear as some portion of consumers would be aware of the ownership change but not all consumers, and those will be the ones looking for that particular brand and unable to find it.

Re: Brand after merger
I agree with this, although for me, I always use the Corporate Brand (it's an ego thing, personally
) but when I buy a company and merge it into me, I lose all their successes in branding. Maybe we could get an option to, when we're merging, convert their brands into our brands (at a cost), or keep their brands in tact (and if so, convert to the Unique Brand model)

Re: Brand after merger
In real life, trade mark usually co-exist at all level for a corporation(like you known Apple, and iPad, iPhone). It's highly unrealistic for a company just be able to use one strategy only.
Maybe a better way to represent this in game mechanism wise is instead of 100% all in at one level, we can have slide bars for every level with different percentages. And the advertisement effect will go into different brand level according to the ratio. And it will be much easier to implement the brand merger since it can simply be added to the current value at that level.
Also in real life, like any other intellectual properties, trade mark can be sold, even shared and paid licence fee. So maybe we can have more options like these to sell and licence brand to other companies or local stores.
