I am not able to search the forum for the phrase "local competitors", so I am sorry if this has already been answered.
Is it possible in game to set the amount of pre-defined competitors very low, but allow local competitors to rise up to normal competitor status? I like the idea of new companies showing up, once competitors go bankrupt or starting with a very small field of actual competitors, but allowing new ones to start up.

I like your idea. The main problem is the number of main competitors directly affects the difficulty of the game. For example, if the game allowed you to start the game with 5 competitors with a max of 40 main competitors, the player would have an incredible advantage. Hell, even with 40 main competitors and an advanced start, the player will eventually close the gap and take over the game.
