Do you get the specialities of those you hire?

I hired a COO with I think a watch specialty. Do you automatically get his specialty globally or does he have to run the R&D or retail or factory to get the various bonuses for a specialty?

It looks like you get the specialty if that guy is running the firm.
I just saw that my COO was running a factory that was making a product in my specialty. I got the new tech and lost a level in the manufacturing unit when upgrading to it.
I assume that means if you have the guy run the R&D you get his tech bonus to his specialty and if he runs the retail you'll get the advertising bonus.
