I'd like the UI to zoom around the mouse cursor rather than around the center of the screen. This both for zooming in and out. Like modern UIs do.
Zooming around mouse cursor has big advantages: when zooming in, you can choose where you want to zoom in to without having to pan the map. It is in fact the least awkward method to pan to any position in the map imho.
Most modern games have this feature, as well as e.g. google maps, etc...
It should also be relatively simple to implement, just a little bit of math with mouse/screen coordinates and panning
