I started a game with the Difficulty rating of 375%, your description is "A Humanly Impossible Challenge! Do not choose this if you want a winnable game"
38 years into the game I was able to have 100% ownership of every AI company in the game (40 computer companies).
As I demolished everything they once owned I noticed they had a lot of useless buildings. Many of them had farms that made the same product and had lost money its entire lifespan. They would have like 8 farms for wool, or leather. They would also almost never be paying to upgrade the farms to get higher quality products out of it. And the grid setup inside the building would be really stupid, there would be 3 crops 3 inventory and 3 sales of the same crop, when they could have had more grow units.
Where they choose to build buildings is really bad for them as well. They need a different though process for building a farm/factory than a store. You see them building a factory where it has foot traffic, or a R&D building in a really expensive spot downtown. These buildings should be built where it is really cheap.
Computers had startup capital of Moderate, Aggressiveness High, yet they would be holding onto 300 million dollars cash which is doing nothing for them. They are choosing to setup a store with only 1 product being sold in it. That one product can't possibly bring in enough profit to make the store worth it.
One company had 4 Chemical materials mines, you really can't make a profit off of selling a natural resource in this game. And I know he didn't need 4 of them for whatever he was making.
It would have helped if he had a better grid setup it was mine x3 inventory x3 sales x3 It could have 6 mine, into 1 inventory with 2 sales would get the most product it could out of it then.
EDIT: Oh another thing I remember was they would be offering to buy my technology of products I don't think they even though about making. Just giving me money.
Probably other things I noticed but I didn't write them down, this is just from memory of last night.
I am on 5.7.14 with 0 mods. My custom script only changed what it costs to hire someone, and it slightly reduced land cost.
There was import of Consumer and Industrial product in each of the 8 cities.
The AI really needs some help.

Yes. AI is becoming really stupid. They built factories with capacities way more than needed. And abruptly close key supplier factories of its own products because it's loosing money.

Re: The AI really needs some help.
I was able to complete everything you just described in the above in 5 years.
By the 10th year, I have total domination in every product, every technology and most land slots in the cities.
AI is weak that is for sure.
