Poll: Remove the possibility to pause the game (please read my reasoning first)

Post by Viktorian »

First of all I would like to say that I do not want to remove pause completely.

I am sure my proposal is relatively controversial, but it should not be dismissed as bad from the very start, because it has a number of advantages and would, notably, solve several problems.

If anyone has played Anno 1800, he perhaps knows in which direction I would like to go.
You can still pause, which will lead you to a pause screen (so you can't do anything in the game itself), or go to the options menu.

Advantages:
The advantage would be mainly the increase in realism.
In real life time doesn't just stop. You have to compete with other companies in real time.
You can continue to think about strategies or just take a break, actions within the game are the only things that are blocked when you pause.

Problems solved:
There are a whole series of exploits that only arise from the possibility of pausing.
The game is based on the fact that all values are updated at the beginning of each new day. However, if you pause and change any value (e.g. add money to a subsidiary company), it will not be taken into account for actions (e.g. bond issue, IPO, loans, share issuance to the parent company). This is pretty much the biggest problem (in the sense of being able to exploit it) of Capitalism Lab and could be solved by this step.
So instead of solving the phenomena of the problem individually, the problem itself should be dealt with.

The change to remove pausing would be small in substance, but large in appearance, that is, effect.

FYI, there is a related script command:

Constant Game Speed=<1 to 5>
If this variable is defined, the game will run at a constant game speed throughout the entire game and the player will not be able to change it. However, if AI Advanced Start is enabled (see below), the constant game speed will not apply during the AI Advanced Start period.

I really don't understand this suggestion.

If you don't want to be able to pause the game, then just don't pause it.
I can only see this as an attempt to force other players to play the game as you prefer playing it.

I never take a loan, nor do I ever issue bonds, but that doesn't mean that the opportunity should removed from the game.
I never build Discount Megastores nor Department Stores, but should that mean that I can request that they should be removed from the game?

I dont see an issue really, if you like to play that way, there is no advantage .. because you presumably already playing like that. That said if it was an optional setting at game generation I wouldn't object to it being added.

I reported the issue with injecting capital into subsidiary's and it not affecting company value, David has advised it is being fixed.

Loop holes are realistic, as someone who has worked in taxation, companies and directors are constantly trying to find new loopholes and exploits with which they can reduce tax and other burdens on themselves and accountants are marketing schemes to companies for that purpose. Enlight could probably create a whole dlc based around tax avoidance.
