Is expertise broken in the latest beta?
I bought the combo pack from your web site and applied the latest patch found in your forums and so I was playing the game and looking to hire a COO so I chose the expertise option to see what the possible candidates might be experienced in and I swear, every single AI in that huge list all had 0 for each expertise, not one single one of them had any experience what-so-ever.
Is it not yet working, or is it just maybe broken due to an update or something like that?

What does the expertise value affect? Advertising is mentioned on the website. R&D?

Re: New Feature: Product Class Expertise
Expertise in a field gives you bonuses to the respective fields performance of units in firms. Every 20 points of expertise boosts the level of a firm unit by 1.
So if you had 20 points in retailing, purchasing and sales units in a retail store would start at level 2. With 40 points of retailing expertise you start with a level 3 unit, up to level 6 with 100 points of expertise. I believe a level 4 unit has 2x the actual capacity and a level 6 has 3x or something close to it. A level 9 has 5x the capacity of a level 1 unit, so it can be very powerful.
Retailing expertise gives bonus to purchasing/sales units in retail stores.
Farming expertise gives bonus to the crop growing, livestock raising/processing units. I think it also boosts the initial quality but I am not sure on this one.
Manufacturing for manufacturing units obviously.
R&D for R&D units.
Raw Materials Production for Logging Camp, Mines and Oil well. (this is by far the least useful one since I personally never max out on the units in a raw materials firm)
Marketing for advertising units in retail stores and elsewhere and gives a boost to the actual effectiveness of marketing by the same amount as the point expertise. 10 points is 10% if I am not mistaken.
Training, this straight up boosts your experience gains for your employees through the training budget. 100 points gives 100% bonus to experience growth.
Expertise in a certain product or software class will give bonus R&D points when researching. 1oo points means you get 100% more R&D done in the same time frame.
As you can see these bonuses can become quite powerful and it will be very hard to dislodge an AI who has high expertise in a certain product class and high R&D as you will be having a really hard time breaking their monopoly.
