AI competition can and should have different standards for when they do stock splits/reverse splits, as well. It can and should be part of their personality.

Any competent Capitalism Lab player should never have to use the reverse stock split, which can signal a company in distress or trying to avoid being delisted according to this Investopedia article. The game forcing the reverse stock split is fine with me. Plus, while the reverse split reduces the number of shares outstanding, it does not change the ownership percentage. It just makes the shares artificially more expensive to acquire.
