Poll - Which resolution do you use on your computer?

Post by City Builder »

Hello guys and gals,

In an attempt to get David to try to get the developers to add 1600x900 screen resolution to Cap Labs he suggested that I make a poll so that maybe he can be armed with enough people that use the 1600x900 resolution maybe he can get that added to the game options so that those of us that have that as our maximum resolution will be able to play the game full screen without it being stretched so terribly out of proportion.

So please choose one of the options in the poll to show what aspect ratio your computer monitor is native at, i.e.,
If your monitor is one of the traditional square monitors then you're likely running at 4:3 aspect,
if you are running at 1600x900 or 1920x1080 then you are running 16:9
If you are running at something like 1920x1200 then you are running at 16:10

Here is a list of resolutions and aspects so that you can check to see what resolution you are running and know what aspect ratio it is.

List of 4:3 Monitor Resolutions
Resolution - Aspect ratio
640x480-----4:3
800x600-----4:3
1024x768-----4:3
1152x864-----4:3
1280x960-----4:3
1400x1050-----4:3
1600x1200-----4:3
2048x1536-----4:3
3200x2400-----4:3
4000x3000-----4:3
6400x4800-----4:3

List of 16:9 Widescreen Resolutions
Resolution - Aspect ratio
852x480-----16:9
1280x720-----16:9
1365x768-----16:9
1600x900-----16:9
1920x1080-----16:9

List of 16:10 Widescreen Resolutions
Resolution - Aspect ratio
1440x900-----16:10
1680x1050-----16:10
1920x1200-----16:10
2560x1600-----16:10
3840x2400-----16:10
7680x4800-----16:10

Feel free to comment if yours is different than any of those listed above.

Primarily I'm doing this like I may have mentioned to try to get the 1600x900 resolution added to the game as it's a pretty standard resolution on laptops today.

Hi City Builder,

You may also ask specifically if users who are using 1600x900 notebook computers would prefer full screen mode to window mode.

I prefer to play fullscreen as well, whenever possible. I currently have 3 different PC's on 2 different locations on which I occasionally play the game. These are the resolutions I use:

1280 x 1024
1680 x 1050
1920 x 1080

The computer that runs 1680 x 1050 is the only one that cannot run fullscreen, and I have to run it at 1280x1024 windowed instead. 1600 x 900 would at least allow for a larger screen on my 1680x1050 pc, although I'd ofcourse prefer a full 1680x1050 resolution :)

@ Dordanov
Running a game fullscreen with 1600x900 on a monitor with a native res of 1680x1050 would realy deform your view, since it would display a 16:9 aspect ratio on a 16:10 monitor.

Which is what I've tried to get across to the Enlight developers, having to run my 1600x900 monitor full screen with only 1024x768 as my only option really deforms my view.

To be absolutely honest, I find it difficult to even believe that David needs to be armed with this kind of information to get them to add in what is today considered one of the standard resolutions. That's a basic thing, covering the resolutions that are in use today. Almost (actually... ALL games that I own) have 1600x900 resolution as a standard resolution choice in the game just like they all have 1920x1080 and 1680x1050 also as standard resolution choices.

It seems to me that something as basic as standard resolution choices should have been on the list of the developers to begin with and not something that users need to suggest to get added to a game.

Apologies, I just get really annoyed by something as basic as screen resolutions needing to be polled or even talked about in a game that a developer/publisher is going to release into todays market, regardless if it's a full game or an expansion.

city builder i think why they are polling it, is because the game/graphics engine dates back to 10 years ago. I have no idea how they do make all those resolutions available in the games these days, but i can image it being more difficult to add screenresolutions into an existing engine specialy an "old one", compared to adding them into an engine still under development.

So as easy it seems in games build now (or last couple years), i doubt there are many older games (not saying caplab is old, the engine just is  ) that have added resolutions, by the developer or modding community).

And 1600x900 isnt so standard as you might think. That resolution compared to all existing mainstream resolutions counts for only <4% of pc users worldwide.

Not trying to be disrespectfull orso toward you citybuilder, just thinking Enlight probably has a good reason to put it into a poll.

I think the problem with a poll to begin with is that there isn't enough people TO poll on this forum. The poll has all of 11 votes (9 of which state they use 16:9 which as you know also includes 1600x900 (720p) ). But it's not just this poll, it's like that across the whole forum here. They don't really have a large enough sample to matter.

So they might end up with maybe 15 people that respond to this poll, would that be enough to convince them they should add in standard resolutions to their game? I highly doubt it. And like I said, it's not just this particular topic, even topics where David asks for info or help or whatever, he might get all of 3 or 5 people that respond.

If it's difficult to add into CL, then I'd have to guess it's because of the way they originally programmed the game, as there are quite a few old games that support 1600x900 even though 1600x900 wasn't even around back in the day they were programmed, so it's got to be the way it was programmed.

It seems to me that there is a huge jump there between this game playing at 1024x768 and 1920x1080 that should be filled in.

I guess the point that I was trying to get across with my post above is that game resolutions are standard affair, you should take into account the need to add them within your budgeting of creating a new version of the game, you add the basics then add the new features, then add the fluff that people would like to see. That's just my opinion though.

And of course I mean no disrespect to you, David or any other user on this forum, it's just frustrating to me that it needs to be polled to try to get resolutions added into a game they want to peddle in todays market.

Edit:
Oh and while 1600x900 resolution accounts for only 4.48%, the 1920x1080 that was added to the game only accounts for only 5.3% AND 1366x768 (which is not included in the game) accounts for 15.24%

I'd gladly settle for even 1366x768 as that would be a more acceptable look on my 1600x900 monitor, than 1024x768

I guess how much it accounts for depends on where you get your stats.

I necro'd this because previous statements are still relevant.

However, I may be an odd duck. I'm still using a 4:3 monitor, but my video game play these days has been somewhat focused on YouTube accessibility.

YouTube mashes anything that does not conform to one of their resolutions, 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, or 1080p, or 3072p for the most part. For filmography this isn't usually a problem, but for computer graphics is can be. Although If I'm playing a game like brothers that has diffusion and bloom and anti-aliasing set to the maximum, it will look blurry, yet good, at whatever resolution. But for game with crisp graphics, like this one and most older ones, and even my favorite roguelikes that are often 80x25 text, they will look like junk once youtube (or other compressors) is done mangling it... unless I record at the exact resolution. Indeed, I recently accidentally recorded a text game at 1055p. YouTube squished it to 720p, anti-aliased it, and it looked surprisingly horrendous. Now, I've hedged on this request because I completely blame YouTube. TwitchTV will let me broadcast in 1055p if I want to. It's YouTube conditions that are the issue.

So, I'm requested video modes compatible with 720p and 1080p, for both 4:3 and 16:9, windowed and fullscreen:
  • 960x720
  • 1280x720
  • 1440x1080
  • 1920x1080
1920x1080 is already in the game for fullscreen, but could you add windowed, also?

720 I realize may be difficult since right now 1024x768 is the minimum game resolution, so 960x720 is less than the minimums. But, I look at the display and think, yes perhaps verticle 48 more lines could be eliminated. Horizontal might be more difficult, maybe the report screen menu could be abbreviated.

1440x1080 is uncommon, but not unheard off [WP:List of Common Resolutions]; it is what I use most commonly these days, just so I can upload to youtube without a fuss. Still, I don't have the greatest upstream bandwidth; streaming quality will be better at a lower resolution like 960x720.

That's that for my suggestion. I don't know if you'd rather just let us attempt any resolution withing limits, however, whether by configuration file or commandline switch.
