Natural resources

Post by David »

We are going to make significant changes to natural resources in Cap2.

Currently all natural resource types have their quality values initialized to a random value between 40 and 100.

The new system will fix aluminum, gold, silver and oil to 100. The rest of the natural resources will be randomly assigned with a quality value between 50 and 90. Please see below table for details.

Aluminum, gold, silver and oil are commodities and do not have any quality differentiation.

We are now investigating the possibility of implementing a commodity trading system for these commodities.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks David for considering this.

I think a commodity trading system is a great idea and at the least, the game needs market pricing for these commodities (maybe the player should have the option of whether or not to offer their commodity at market price?)

I would also consider a similar system for agricultural products (because they are traded much in the same way as oil, etc).

I also wanted to throw out the possibility of creating new products with these commodities.

For example, you could add refineries that create gasoline, motor oil, etc and sell that product at convenience stores (which are already in the game I believe).

As for the creation of utility companies, I like that's a good idea as long as they exist in a similar fashion as the media outlets.

In my opinion, all natural resrouce commodities should be available on a commodity market. This will take away the need for small scale manufacturers to set up a whole mining operation by themselves, or hope the AI would do so, or wait to get lucky at the industrial docks. It makes much more sense, and it removes the a lot of chore for starting manufacturers.

Likewise, when you invest in a mining endeavour, you should be able to sell off the surplus on the global market. Of course, the increased supply should (depending on the increase and existing demand) adjust the price level of the commodity. This will make the prospect of becoming a resource producer much more attractive.

I totally agree with commodity market and global selling. ;)

And is it me or does the AI hardly ever drop mines down? That needs fixing as its the way I end up making my money, in mining and flogging it all to the AI.

What did you mean by dropping mines down?

As in a resource like Oil appears. Sits there for ages with everyone really wanting Oil but the AI doesn't bother to place a well on it. Eventually they might but most often not, I'll beat them to it.

Doesn't gold and silver have differences in how pure they are... so the quality could mean that.

Commodity trade is a very good idea.. sometimes u have to buy a mine just for little use..
Enlight could reconsider some changes in uses of natural resource.. example do not exist aluminum mining.. there is a product of bauxite (that could be a natural resource and it could be used in other process like metallurgical, abrasive, cement, chemical, and refractory.
Gold is almost useless without a alloy.. in general uses like a ring, necklace there is a alloy with 25% of silver..
Oil have much other products besides plastic like gasoline, diesel (used in many industries like combustible), grease.. Could be add some of these items a Car Shop (or automotive shop, convenience store, Megastore)..
Oil and Coal could be used to generate Power (it could be need for lots of industries in some type of Utility Company)..
I am Production Engineer in great Energy Company in Brazil, if i could help with some technical knowledge just send me a mail, it will be a pleasure.
