I know Capitalism is mainly a company orientated game, but the idea's of more personal options of growing personal wealth and the option to start out as a private investor have been around my head since the very first version.
We have been thinking about ways to introduce Capitalism Lab to new players (which currently does not have any tutorials and is limited to appealing to users of Capitalism 2 only). One idea is to let new players just play the components of real-estate development and stock trading and disable the function to build any other types of buildings.

The player may start as an individual investor as suggested above.

And we could create web pages with tutorials in text and videos teaching new players how to do stock investment/trading and real-estate development. Once the player has spent sufficient time to get familiar with the game, it will open up the other features to the player (those traditional Cap2 features: retail, manufacturing, farming, R&D and etc).

What are your thoughts on this?

Expanding on your idea to open out the game to new players, the novice player is placed into a already functional company (i.e. has an infrastructural of manufacturing, farming and retail already set up), and is offered the chance of managing an individual retail outlet. So has the chance within that company to set prices, advertise locally, store training, and source new products (within the companies infrastructure.) Once a certain level of competence is achieved (Could be making a certain profit?), the novice player is then offered the chance of the next step up. This could be to a retail specialism, so offered the chance to manage a higher number of stores (like an area manager), or to manage another part of the company, i.e. factory or farming. This again is judged on level of competence and then move up again, till eventually the novice player is moved all the way up the chain to COO and/or CEO. While all this is operating the 'Player' part is earning a set wage at the lower stage of learning, and obviously earns quite a wide ranging sum on promotion to the higher levels of management. After this the player has the chance with the money earned to go off on their own from the starter company.

This could also not only be a good way to practically teach new players the in's and outs of the game, but also an interesting new game mode to sit along side campaign and custom game.

Hope that all makes sense, not everything that comes out of my head always ends up on the page how I intend it to be :D

Starting as an investor would be nice, but would that also mean that you later in the game can sell all your shares in all your companies and start "fresh"?

Cap II has a number of scenarios to play, arent those really there to teach the player about the game?
Ofcourse, more detailed info on how the mechanics behind for example the stock exchange on the website for players to get deeper knowledge could be useful.

I really like that idea. What if I build up a strong company that makes a product. Then sell all my shares and start (or buy) another company to compete in the same, or other market. It happens in real life, and it would really be interesting to see if the AI ceo of my old company can run it as well as I did, and beat me in the competition.
It's a very good idea. I always thought about selling my company completly and opening a new one, or buying one of my competitors (owning more than 75 % shares should be sufficient). Fire the AI CEO should be no problem, a least by canceling his/her contract with a lot of money. :ugeek:

You have my *like* on that. ;)

Hello guys,

Could there be a chance that you can also go SHORT on a stock?(for example you can only buy shares and wait for it to increase to be profitable) but what if you can go SHORT(have a tab near the BUY - SELL(for example) and gain profits from a company's stock price fall). 8-)

This way we can be profitable even durring a world crisis( :D )

Funny (not really) but my stock exchange window doesn't look like those first two images in this topic. Maybe because game isn't running at my screens maximum resolution since I don't find an option to run at 1600x900 and am forced to run it at only 1024x768. Would that be the reason that in my stock exchange screen, some of the data is only shown in two lines and I have to scroll to see two more lines instead of like in your screenshot where I can see many of the stock reports on how they are doing.

Thats strange, my computer is 1920x1080, and I am running the game at 1280x960 with no problems.
Do you not have that option?

My maximum resolution is 1600x900 so even if I could use 1280x960 that would mean that 60 pixels would be cut off the bottom of my screen and I would not be able to see the entire game.

You can almost always downsize but you can't up size, what I mean is that if I have a monitor that runs at 1920x1200 I can run games at 1920x1200 or at 1920x1080 because it's a lower resolution, so you can always fit a smaller image on a larger resolution but not the other way around.

It seems that they did not take into account 16:9 format of the most common size (1600x900) and that's just a shame. Since this is still beta, I'm still hoping that they will add the 1600x900 resolution or at the very least, 1366x768 or 1280x720 which are all 16:9 format.

How about stock split?
i think if your company's price is more than $50, you should be able to split stocks like 2-1 3-1 5-1 10-1, because I'm not a Warren Buffet so I don't like my stocks to cost $2000 and more.
