A friend of mine bought the game on my advice. Sadly, she's using a Mac. We tried to install the beta on a Windows XP running inside VMware Fusion for Mac and then also Oracle VirtualBox.
On none worked. After I press Login in the loader it just exists and no window appears.
Capitalism Lab 2 and the non-beta version work.
Why doesn't the beta work inside a virtual machine?

We will release a new beta later this week that should fix the issue with running on WinXP.

Patch 2.6.09 has been released. It fixes the compatibility issues with Windows XP.
